Don't Tell Me She Smells

I took Vicki for her usual afternoon walk yesterday. Our area attracts loads of joggers. Sometimes it can be difficult to navigate ourselves through these people but most are considerate and make way for The Barge. Perhaps it is not so much about consideration and more about not wanting to trip over her.

Vicki had done her business and I had a little bag that I wanted to deposit in the trash can. There was a group of joggers resting by the trash can (why, I don't know). One of the joggers hesitantly gave Vicki some pets while another one said with a scrunched up face, "It smells". Now she was no where near Vicki or her little baggie but I had to elbow someone out of the way to the trash can opening and quickly shot back, "You smell!" and walked away. Her remark sparked a response in me as though someone were criticizing my child. As I write this I feel the sting again. Shrinking away from a little pug is one thing or commenting on her weight but for some reason this comment really got me. Oh well Vicki doesn't care about these things so now I'll let it go.

  1. Hi Laura and Vicki,

Vicki, I can only imagine that you smell of roses!

A similar situation happened to me in the elevator of our apartment...We were on the way up when I small girl looked at Duke, said "boo boo boo" and waved her hand in front of her nose. Mom was there, but this was perfectly acceptable behavior to her. I told the girl, as politely as I could (I was furious!) that Duke does not smell, and that she needs to stop being silly and act more mature. Actually, after I said that, I think she totally got it!

There must be hundreds of dogs at the complex where we live, and most people are happy to see an pet Duke, but there have been a few that say or do things to upset me. You're right, all we can do is brush it off!

  2. Oh, she does smell like roses!! (heehee)

You handled the situation with far more maturity and patience than I displayed! In the future, I'll try to be more gracious in the hope that others will be more tolerant toward our beloved pets.
