Hello From Vicki

I just wanted to let people know that Vicki is doing fine these days although she has a red bulbous protrusion on her eyelid called a meibomian gland cyst.

The vet gave us some antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory but the area hasn't changed much. It really doesn't seem to bother her but the vet suggests surgery to remove the cyst if it doesn't improve.

We are living in a different area for a few more months and then Vicki, our cat Augustus and Greg and Laura will be moving back to Canada. We'd like to get the surgery done before the big move, if it has to be done. For now Christmas is fast approaching and Vicki will be at the Dogotel over the holidays.
We'll keep sharing whatever news we have.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Love, Vicki and Laura xoxo

Not Much to Say

Vicki stayed in the kennel for a few days while we skipped out on a long weekend away. She came back smelling like the kennel so I immediately gave her a shower (we have no bath tub here). After her shower, she still smelled like the kennel so I sprinkled her with some talcum powder and that seemed to make things a little better. She still looks adorable as her buzz cut grows back…

Our New Home

The place we've moved to temporarily is much smaller than our old home where Vicki had the run of the house. For a pug Vicki takes up a lot of space but she's had to learn to share a bit. The front door is easily moved when Vicki slams her body against it at any hint of noise outside. She creates quite a stir. She's already made a few new friends though most around these parts are not appreciators of dogs. Lately, we've had huge amounts of rain and Vicki is not too keen on getting her paws wet but she still manages anyway.

Once again she'll be heading for the kennel while we go away for a long weekend. At least the new home is bigger than the kennel!

LIttle Princess

These photos were taken after Vicki's grooming experience at Little Princess. She is appreciably cooler and loves scratches even more so now.

Our New Home

Vicki is excited to have a new space to explore and new noises to fuss about. We took Vicki to the groomer's, Little Princess, during the move. I have photos of Vicki after the groomer's - they shaved her and she looks like a different dog. All I can looks soooo cute! I'll load them in a couple of days. Our new place has several stairs which I'm proud to say Vicki takes with ease while last year she couldn't manage three.

Where'd the Sofa Go?

Vicki's not bored these days but she is perplexed as to where her sofa went. We are in the process of moving and she must rest on cushions on the floor. These last couple of days she's been wandering in circles looking for her big bed - the sofa.

Vicki Loves Her Walks

These days the weather has been a little less hot and Vicki's walks have been more regular. Yesterday afternoon she let Greg know she had to go and sure enough she did. It makes me wonder who's on the schedule here because it usually feels like we are on Vicki's time.

She gets fed first thing in the morning and at 6 p.m. sharp in the evening. There is little room in Vicki's plan for deviation. After the evening meal there must be pets and scratches completed by an evening walk. After some rest from her busy schedule there's often a playtime of tug-of-war or ball tossing. Anything can become an amusement to Vicki from small plastic objects to tissue to socks.

New Toy and More Joy

Vicki loves this new toy we found for her. If I wrench it from her steely jaws and hide it behind my back she goes ballistic. If Greg throws it down and lets it bounce Vicki loves to chase the ball and chew on it for awhile. We threw away her blue string and she hardly seems to miss it yet she still loves her tiger kong.I just appreciate that she has so much energy and movement in her body to be able to play with her toys and really enjoy it all.

Overcoming Boredom

These days Vicki seems bored. She has a couple of kongs, string, balls, pull toys, etc. and it all seems a little blah for our girl. We always have to change up our walk routes to keep her clipping along otherwise it's all just sniffing around. We got her a new ball that looks like the diagram of an atom or something. The look of it is like that of colourful spaghetti and it is rubber. This ball bounces and stretches and squeaks but the fun factor only lasts so long.

Hang in there, girl, change is a-coming real soon!

Heavier Times

I found a picture of Vicki from her chubbier days. She was still very cute and it looks like she couldn't even make it to the couch, we had to put the pillows on the floor for her. Nowadays she flies around, jumping on my lap to stick her snout in my drink (whatever it may be) and pouncing on the sofa after a nice bath while leaving puddles of wet dog water everywhere. I kinda miss those chubbier days though now she breathes much easier and her snoring levels have been reduced by at least half.

Normal Routines

Some days I just don't want to do the full walk. I have on occasion persuaded Vicki that it was time to head back. Today would not be one of those days. Today Vicki wanted the full walk and then some. She stops and sniffs every little corner or stops and chases her tail. Yesterday, I was running a bit late for walk time and she stood by the door in full pug-stance as if to say, "Okay c'mon lady I'm ready to go here." Routines are an important part of daily life and there is only one other routine that trumps walking for Vicki and that is feeding time. Very little room for deviation of that little routine and anyone listening to me preparing her food would think the poor thing was being pinched or poked. She squeals like a pig sometimes. I'm sure the neighbours know by now it's all part of the routine.

Itchy Vicki

Vicki gets Frontline regularly and flea baths too but lately I've noticed her scratching quite a bit. She'll actually scratch to the point of yelping which I find disturbing. When I mentioned this to the vet he said pugs commonly develop skin irritations and the best treatment is continued use of omega 3's. Vicki now takes a caplet of omega 3 fatty acids. It'll take some time to see the effect it has on her scratchy skin but it can't do her any harm. What with her raw food diet, regular exercise and supplements I estimate she's gonna live longer than us and more comfortably so too with no skin irritations.

Happy Anniversary

Yay! Today is Vicki's one year anniversary. It was on this day one year ago that we picked her out of 150 dogs needing homes. We saw a couple of other dogs but as soon I saw Exel I knew she was the one for us. She was big and beautiful and now she's just beautiful and she knows it. She uses that cuteness to get her way with us with so many things from treats, to extra love to using our socks and underwear as her personal chew toys. Our sofa has to have a cover on it always and there must be newspaper down in the kitchen most days but our life here seems a little more interesting with our four-legged furry barker on duty 24/7. She is so spritely that she escaped from our apartment and ran down 3 flights of stairs and out to the parking garage for a little run around before I could chase her back in, she easliy jumps out of the tub and onto our damp laps with no effort whatsoever.

We're so happy to have you with us, Vicki!

Getting Better

Vicki's doing better these days. Nothing has slowed down her want of coffee with Bailey's, chicken noodle soup or fruit (I'm sure she'd love a cracker with peanut butter on it). We still have her on dry kibble but we picked up some canned pumpkin which is supposed to help with the um...binding process. So far no messes today and things in general are binding better. She's off next week to the vet on Tuesday for her vaccination. Her one-year anniversary with us is here already. Ah, good times!

Dog Diarrhea

Poor Vicki is having a bout of some nasty diarrhea since we brought her home from the kennel. 2 days of messes everywhere. We have her eating dry kibble for now but other than that she's still active and happy to be home. I have restricted her walks because it is so hot outside and I don't want to over exert her. She still has an appetite because she just dives for our food whenever she gets an opportunity and she still chews tissues even going into my purse to get them! We've had to cut back her coffee and wine consumption too. I'll keep a close watch on her and see if she needs to go to the vet's in the next couple of days. Hopefully this messy situation will pass soon.

Back Home

Mom says she is tired these days. She calls it jet lag. Doesn't matter to me though I love my walks, need my food and have been remarking my territory in the house. A little pee in the kitchen, bathroom and Mom's favourite, the Persian rug in the bedroom. I'm also very hungry and will go for anything from coffee to pasta to satisfy my cravings. Oh, that cat is still here and we've been scrapping quite a bit. He never stops crying and sometimes i just give him a swipe to keep him in line. I've also resumed my watchdog duties barking whenever I hear a strange noise or someone in the hallway. Mom told me I was doing a great job on the blog and said I could definitely help out every now and then.

Bye for now, I'm tired and ready to go back to my own bed. What a relief!

Not Looking Back

Well I hear Mom and Greg will be springing me from this place shortly. The people here are really great. Don't know why I ever thought of escaping. No one is standing over me as I type this. Really. Thought I'd send a picture along. No doubt Mom'll be taking more when she gets back.

Planning My Escape

Been in this place for 10 days now. The wardens here let me out just twice a day for exercise with others. They've taken away my toys because I'm not sharing. I haven't had a real treat since I've been in here. I still get my two squares and plenty of water. Most are happy here but I've been whispering to a few others about leaving. I'm sure I can find my way back home. If they just gave me a biscuit or something I could jam the door with it. I've been doing my laps and jumps to keep in shape. I know Mom and Greg are trying to do what's best for me but I need my couch, my real bed and my walks.

Any day now I'll be free again.

Living it up

I'm staying at the Dogotel. Here they give me showers, clip my nails and I get to play with other dogs. I don't really enjoy sharing my toys though. Some dogs just don't get it. These toys are my property so they need to back off. I'm not really allowed to use the computer but I just snuck by one of the staff to type my message. Stiill miss my people but I know they'll come and get me soon. Big sloppy wet dog kisses to everyone and I promise mom'll be back soon. Maybe she'll let me write once in a while now too. Woop woop Dogotel is nice for me!!

Don't Tell Mom

Last night Greg was having pizza for dinner and he had a bottle of something. I really wanted that pizza and he gave me some. That alone would make mom upset but he also gave me a drink in my dish. Boy was it tasty! Something called beer. Now I'll keep begging because these two are soft touches and they eat yummy treats sometimes. I loved that drink and Greg didn't mind sharing. Now if I could only get mom to share her food a little more too. Mmm, beer...

I Made Greg Angrrrry!

I have been barking alot while mom's away and when I'm quiet it's not exactly a great sign. Greg left a spray on the edge of the bathroom vanity and I grabbed it right away. So happy to have something new to play with but when he noticed I thought he'd wring my neck. I hid the lid in my bed for chewing on later. He was mumbling and searching everywhere for it. Finally, he found it all chewed up and took it away. I need to find a better hiding spot for these things. He didn't give me any pets and scratches for the rest of the morning and said a quick good-bye when he left for work. He doesn't stay angry for too long though. All is forgiven now but the bathroom vanity is all clear.

*Sigh* Where's Mom

I usually spend my days moping on the couch and dad just gets home later than usual. He fed me as soon as he got home and then went to that Skype-thing that sounds like mom but really isn't. I don't bother with it. Well I needed my walked so I scratched and begged until he got his butt off that chair and took me for a walk. My raw food diet is so good I feel really energetic but it hasn't helped my waistline. I haven't been weighed lately but Greg has a hard time hoisting me up to the computer so I can see the outline of mom (I think). I'm pretty pissed off with her right now for leaving so I just jump down and bark a lot. I sure hope she'll be back soon and I wouldn't even mind a bath.

Sunday, July 18, 2010

Hello All

I'm pretty good today because Greg is home and it gives me a chance to really tell him how I'm feeling. I like it when he's around. He drinks coffee with Bailey's Irish Cream in it and I just bark and bark until he puts some in my bowl. It works like a charm every time. I am pretty charming. They feed me the best food. Mom says I eat better than they do most of the time. I love food especially raw chicken with the bones. These days I get lots more attention from Greg too but no walk tonight. The thunder and lightning scares me and I don't think Greg is keen on it either. All in all it's a good day. Bye for now. Kisses to mom ~ miss you. Vicki xx.

Vicki Here

Hey people, it's me, Vicki. My mom has gone away and left me and I hear she won't be back for awhile. I miss her but I thought I'd fill you in on what's happening around here. That cat sleeps all day and that's a drag. He sits on his kitty condo and I can't reach him. Oh well, when I chase him he usually just bats me in the head anyway. So really I'm left to sleep most of the day. By the time Greg gets home I'm so wired I just want my food, a walk and some scratches. He does all that lightning fast and then goes and talks to the computer and that freaks me out cause it sounds alot like mom.

No kong treats during the day, no mid-afternoon snacks and on the plus-side no baths. She thinks I love taking baths but really I just love chewing up the towel when I'm out.

All in all I miss mom and just hang out trying to find some trouble to get into. What a life.

Vicki on Skype

This morning I got to see my grrrl on Skype. She could hear my voice and made the sideways head turn at the computer it was so gosh darn cute I just wanted to reach in and kiss her. She's feeling under the weather today because she ate a nut or seed or something that made her throw up all over the flat. A pleasant surprise for Greg when he came home from work. I did manage to get a tail wag out of her though. Oh the marvels of technology. Can't wait to talk to Vicki again. Of course, I'm one of those insanely annoying people that speaks in a high pitched baby-voice to my dog...She loves it!!

Far From Vicki

Aw, I miss her already. I'll be away from Vicki for almost one month and I'm feeling it. Greg says she's moping around the house. She sleeps on her pillow on the couch with her face buried and eyes downcast. I'm having fun here in TO but I hope one day Vicki will be able to experience the wide open spaces, more relaxed attitudes and fresh air and meet some new friends. We'll see. For now I just hear her barks on the other end of the phone and remember that I don't miss the barking too much :c) but I do miss that adorable face.

Guilty Pleasures

Hey, I know writing a blog about my dog is not considered the best use of my time but I really enjoy it. Just as Vicki loves her daily scratches and the odd treat, I love to write about my dog. The bonus for me is that a few other people actually seem to enjoy reading about her too and I'm so grateful for that.

I wish I had some exciting tales to tell but at the moment I'm drawing a blank. The heat has zapped her seemingly inexhaustible energy for the time being. She just simply flops on the coolest surface she can find such as the kitchen or bathroom tiles and that's that.

She did manage to sneak out of the flat this morning and made a beeline down three flights of stairs. Imagine my surprise when I stepped off the elevator and there was Vicki. For a moment my not too sharp brain thought perhaps there was a twin pug in the building but no it was our girl. I scooped her up and placed her back in the apartment wondering how in the hell she managed that quick escape. Now who's the guilty one? LOL

Vicki's a Hottie

Okay, I have to admit pugs are a smelly breed. Baths and special smelling powders don't do the trick. This time last year Vicki could barely walk 200 yards now she usually sprints to the park. Strangely though dogs are not allowed in parks here in Honkers even on a leash. I would not recommend taking your dog for a cool walk after say around 10 o'clock in the evening and letting her into the park. No, I would never do that unless I kept her on her leash and sprayed down her messes and kept her really quiet…sshhh

Taking Care of Business

There's no question our grrrl loves people. She likes some other dogs but generally she's choosy about the dogs she meets however, when it comes to people, she loves 'em. Anyone is a good target for pets and scratches and she's getting plenty of attention these days at home and out on her walks. These are the dog days of summer so they say and everyone moves a little slower in this heat. Today reached up to 33 celsius but according the weather website it was 48 celsius with the humidex. Vicki's walks are shorter as pugs do mind the heat (so does this Canadian) but she's raring to go no matter what the weather brings.

Check out these sites for tips on dogs and hot weather:

Warm Welcome from Vicki

Vicki cannot rest with the arrival of our guest. She barks continuously. She doesn't know whether to stay in her bed at night or just go and harass our company. Poor Andrew succumbed to Vicki's bad ways and eventually brought her up on the bed with him. While this stopped her from barking for awhile, it wasn't long before she was at it again.

Treats, threats, walks, baths - none of these seem to placate her. Let's hope she adjusts to our guest soon before he decides to take up a room at the "Y".

Guests from Home

Today, we are expecting a guest from Canada. This will be the first time Vicki will have to share her couch with anyone for an extended period of time. Though I doubt we'll be around much anyway. Hong Kong is a busy city and not the time or place for sitting around. She's a different dog on the raw food diet with lots of energy and very playful! Thankfully, her breath smells better too and after a bath her coat smells better and I'll note that her coat looks much healthier too.

Vicki loves chicken and fish. I just need to find a good place to get some of those meaty beef bones that we know she'll appreciate. Any suggestions would be helpful. I'll try Wanchai or Causeway Bay on Saturday.

It's Her "Raw" Food Diet

Vicki's schedule is out of whack. She's up barking half the night and her eating and walking schedules have been disrupted. She loves raw chicken and fish. Maybe other kinds of meat too. I tried ground beef with green peas and a small amount of whole wheat bread. There are many sights about raw food feeding but the best I can do is see what good food she likes eating. She has lots of energy but her weight is still the same. It is hard to say no to her. She's far more demanding.

Also raw eggs in the shell were recommended by one site. I must go buy some more for her today.

It can get kinda messy getting fish parts and chopping up chicken legs but she loves it so much! She's eating right now and I have to keep the kitchen door closed so that she can enjoy her food properly.

This is an example of what she might have for dinner.

She Barks Non-Stop

this dog was SPOILED before we got her and well afterward too. Man, this barking is getting out of hand. We may have rescued her but "No good deed goes unpunished." Time for the dog whisperer or away to the SPCA for some propa training!

"How are you these days, Laura?" Vicki replies, "Ruff, ruff."

Vicki's Raw Food Diet

We have had Vicki on a raw food diet for a couple of weeks now. I wouldn't say this diet is actually slimming. She gets chicken parts (even frozen) peas, greens and a little bit of wholewheat bread, nuts and berries. It is recommended they don't have other fruit but she loves pineapple. What Can I say? She has so much more energy and her breath smells better too. Sometimes i throw ginger in or beetroot. She absolutely love the raw food diet. I highly recommend it. She is looking a little portly again but she's happy.

Laura's Back

Vicki's back to her barking ways, I guess June may bring some better days. I hope that roaming dog was found. He had no collar and he might have had fleas. I guess we'll see what tomorrow brings.

Dog Roaming the Neighbourhood

There was a dog roaming around Vicki tonight as we took her for a late night walk, here is a picture. He needs to be rescued. I did my part for him now the choice is yours.

Vicki's Changing

We've switched Vicki to raw food and there's a remarkable difference in everything about her.
1. her breath isn't stinky
2. her poops are cleaner, although she is sometimes constipated as with today.
3. She loves eating raw chicken, fish only so-so and I still am working on getting the balance right for her.
4. She even drinks certain kinds of herbal tea in small amounts, mint is good without sugar.
Dogs seem to know what they need and probably we people do too but it is difficult to find the right balance.

Good Morning

Well, I took Vicki for a walk today and decided to go a different route down to MacDonnell Road. It was very hot this morning so I decided to grab a taxi. I paid and walked home. O. Then I realized I didn't have my wallet. I retraced my steps and told others along the way. Then I returned home and there was the wallet. I had also left the back door open last night after staying up all night with all the lights on. Not the most prudent behaviour. A few good hours sleep is really important for me. Being a feisty person is good in some circumstances but I don't know when to temper that fire sometimes.

Vicki is fine, my wallet is fine but I think I'm a little torn. Some of you already knew that.

Have a grrrreat day!

Throwing the Dog a Bone

At long last. A video of Vicki's chase for a brontosaurus bone.

Vicki's Good

Just a quick update on Vicki's weight. She hasn't dropped much lately but she started with us at a mega 33 pounds and now sits at 22.6 pounds (10.25 kilos).

It really wasn't too difficult. We carefully measured her food portions and gave her a couple of walks daily.

People are sometimes impressed or at least somewhat interested in her journey. Now that she is a healthier weight she has more energy, she doesn't snore as loudly and she can just get around with general ease.

She is a much more playful dog these days and having her with us feels good. We take care of her and she takes care of us. Good girl, Vicki.

Mother's Day

Pets to some of us just naturally become part of the family. Today is a special day for anyone who mothers.

To Vicki this is just another day. I stepped in her pee on the kitchen floor this morning and removed a small bit of plastic from her clenched jaw. She nearly bit my finger off as I tried to remove it. She still needs her walk soon and her breakfast..

She doesn't care whether it is Mother's Day and she sure won't be wishing me a happy one either.

It's okay, I still love her. Hug your children, hug your Mom, hug your pets and have a Happy Mother's Day today.

Rolling Thunder and Pouring Rain

Last night was destined to be my first full regular night's sleep in possibly well over a month. Not so because at sometime after 3 am Vicki began barking at each flash of lightning over the next several hours. Where does she get the stamina to just keep barking? Greg had the right idea for a while. Draw the double blinds, close the door and put her in her bed. Problem temporarily solved until the bedroom door flew open and boy did that set her off!

She's not ready and raring to go for that morning walk today, oh no. She's happily snoozing on her pillow and that's fine by me. The rain has stopped and the sun might be peeking out right now.  Maybe tonight will be the night for a proper night's sleep. zzzzz

She Barks, She Begs and She Borrows

Okay, our Vicki gets away with plenty.

For her barking it has been suggested we use aversion therapy, so we have a tin of coins we shake whenever she barks.

If I go into the kitchen for any reason whatsoever, she is front and centre looking for anything to drop. Of course eating of any kind is met with those woeful brown eyes and the curly cue wagging tail. Okay, the odd morsel drops around her and I know this just reinforces the behaviour.

She takes my shoes, my hair bands, notepads, sunglasses or anything else left lying around that she deems chewable.

What can I do to get her to behave better? I've tried placing her in the bedroom for a couple of minutes for begging, dog-proofing the flat or usually firmly but sometimes shrilly shouting "no bark!"

Patience is a virtue that is often lost on me. Having a dog is easy but having a well-behaved one sometimes isn't. Who do I have to blame but myself?

When Laura's Away

I have been away from home quite a bit this month and while I miss Vicki, it seems she may get just a little bit more spoiled than usual.

Greg has a video of Vicki ravenously chowing down on what looks like a huge brontosaurus rib bone. However, I cannot get this video to load up. So, for now this photo will have to suffice.

Such a beautiful day and Vicki thoroughly enjoyed her morning trot today. It's good to be back!

Vicki Withdrawals

Once again I find myself away from the pugnacious one. Funny thing is that this time as I packed my suitcase, she began pulling things out. She sniffed around in the folded up stuff and just dragged half of it out onto the floor.

After the bag was finally packed and zipped up I sat down and she licked my face while generally demanding scratches. She most definitely seemed to want more attention than usual. She now sees that suitcase and knows it's not good news for her.

Well, as I wheeled the bag out the front door, she adamantly followed me right out into the hallway. She had to be picked up and placed back inside. "Be a good girl," I told her and quickly made my exit.

It's never easy leaving but coming back is always a treat.

A Rainy Day

The news these days is not so good. Earthquakes, murders, plane malfunctions in the newspaper not to mention personal issues. Never mind we all have our burdens to bear but, rain or shine, Vicki still gets her walk.

Now, unlike Vicki, I don't bound out the door enthusiastically at the prospect of scooping up her poop and dousing down her pee spots even on a sunny day. She loves to just get out, sniff around and get some socializing in all the same.

I'm thinking now it's not all so bad. I have a wedding to look forward to next week, see my family and old, old friends and we need the rain to allow things to grow. Also, Vicki put a smile on a woman's face as the woman waited in the cold rain on the sidewalk for a ride today. Maybe it's not much but perhaps if we all do a little something to make someone else feel better things will get better. It might make you feel a little bit better anyway.

Urgent Help Needed by HKDR

Months ago, I mentioned that the HKDR would have to move from its current location and they were due to move end of February to a new site. Unfortunately, the new site has been found unsuitable for use as a kennel and all of the dogs will be homeless. They have until the end of April at the current location and then they will have to move out.

They are asking for help at this time. If you can foster, adopt, make a donation or know of an appropriate site for HKDR please do what you can to assist.

Here is the letter we received by email this morning:

Dear Laura and Greg

If you have read my recent blog posts or today's SCMP story on HKDR's current situation, you will be aware that the land near Tung Chung that we had been planning to move to has turned out not to be suitable for use as a kennel.

All of our focus and efforts over the past few months have been on building a new Homing Centre there, and now we are left with nowhere to go. Swire Properties have confirmed that 30th April is the final deadline for us to leave our current Pokfulam Kennels site, which means that as from the end of this month HKDR - and that means all of the dogs - will be homeless.

We need help, and urgently.  If you are thinking about adopting a dog, please come to our kennels and have a look at those that are waiting there.   If you can foster until we sort a new site out (and we don't know how long that will take), please offer a temporary home to one of our dogs.  If you can donate money to help us pay for private boarding, or sponsor a particular dog's boarding costs, please let us know.

We have just two weeks to find a place for our dogs.  Please, please HELP.  Send out this message to all of your friends, work colleagues or database if you have one.

We also need a place to build our planned Homing Centre.  There must be someone who knows of a suitable site, so help us get the word out across Hong Kong.

Pugs Bunny

There it is. Vicki could not let Easter pass without wishing all of her friends and fans a fantastic holiday. Remember chocolate isn't good for dogs but a little treat is always appreciated. Smile!

She Stinks Purdy

The Wash Your Pet Pet mobile stopped by yesterday for Vicki's quick pick me up. Within a half hour the team had her shampooed, nails clipped and sent her off with a pretty red bow. She tore off the bow almost as soon as she returned home.

She's feeling much better after last week and now she smells better too for the moment.

Tummy Troubles

Poor Vicki hasn't been feeling well these last two days. She's been throwing up and when I gave her a dentabone she just held it in her mouth and didn't immediately eat it. She is also slower than usual on her walks and sleeping quite a bit. Really hope she's okay. She did eat her dinner this evening so that's good. There are notices posted along Bowen Road warning about dog poisonings and I do get concerned that she may eat something off the street. It has been happening for years in this area. She's so quick to sniff out a piece of abc gum, stray bits of garbage or anything that slightly resembles food. I really do not want to put a muzzle on her. It just makes me so angry that a person would want to poison dogs, I just cannot comprehend it. I don't really think she was poisoned but just to have that worry because of someone who wants to harm dogs (and could possibly do harm to others even little children perhaps).

She's up and running at the moment and barking at someone in the hallway so hopefully she's feeling better now.

Moving On

I just started thinking about my little Vicki blog again. It has been a good exercise in sitting down to write everyday and I love being able to look back at Vicki's integration into life here with us. She is a very lucky dog, she knows.

She is continuing to shed pounds though still has a little way to go to get in the healthy range. I had her in to see the vet about a rash on her belly. She gave us some antibacterial soap to cleanse the area and said it is probably just blackheads. Another girl who works at the clinic told me she has two pugs and they frequently get skin irritations. This is the first I'd noticed any skin irritation on Vicki. Two days later and her rash is almost gone.

Well, I'm writing about different things these days but I'll pop in every now and then to keep you posted on our girl. Bye for now. Thanks for reading and for your comments and I wish you and your lovable pets all the best!

A Little Buddha in Her Belly

The other day Vicki managed to clamour up to a nearby windowsill where we keep a little jade Buddha. She made off with Buddha in a flash. I had visions of her swallowing him whole but after chasing her around for a few minutes she positioned herself on her favourite pillow and put the Buddha down beside her.

Vicki's change in size has definitely made her more agile but that little Buddha might have given her some nasty indigestion.

wash your pet pet

It was an exciting night for Vicki when she was picked up outside our building by Sunny from wash your pet pet. He handed me a card and said, "I'll have her back in 1 to 2 hours." Vicki was a little unsure of this set-up but went along with it anyway. A couple of hours later she came back a primped princess.

Our Vicki is not really the little pink bow kind of dog but she looked great. Wash your pet pet is a mobile pet grooming service here in Hong Kong, the land of every convenience known to adults. Of course there's a mobile pet grooming service.

She smells good for the time being. She doesn't look drastically different but her nails are clipped without bleeding (as she did when I attempted it) and her ears and face are impeccably clean.

Every now and then we'll treat Vicki to a visit with Sunny and the pet pet mobile.

Vicki's Internet Friend

Take a close look at the photos of this handsome fella. This is the face of another lucky dog rescued from HKDR shortly after we got Vicki. His name is Duke or affectionately known as "The Duke" by his mom whose name is also Laura.

I wonder if our happy HKDR dogs will meet someday perhaps on a light stroll or even in this year's Peak to Fong fundraiser.

Duke was slightly underweight when he was adopted but that doesn't seem to be an issue for him anymore. He now looks like a happy, healthy and well-fed pooch.

This could be a match made in cyberspace.

Couch Cleaning

Today we have two lovely men in cleaning our couch. It was a three month old piece of furniture when Vicki arrived on the scene and today it looks about 10 years old.

I've said it before and, I'll say it again, she loves company. The poor thing doesn't get much attention from us you know. She shamelessly puts on the full-body tail wag and is just about the right height to lick dangling fingers. I mean most people might pet her just to wipe the saliva from their fingers, for our Vicki this is mission accomplished.

She's in the bedroom now with the door closed and hopefully not causing too much trouble. Once she's released we know the couch won't stay clean for long.

Vicki Screams for Ice Cream

Laura doesn't share food or drinks with Vicki and yet the pugnacious one will persist. She sticks her snout in my glass of juice or looks longingly into my eyes as I dip the spoon into a container of Ben & Jerry's to soothe my sore throat and comfort a cold. It is hard to resist her charms but that I do.

Greg is definitely more kind-hearted as he allows her to clear a plate. Hmph, I don't think this indulgent behaviour helps my cause as it rewards Vicki's begging ways.

Admittedly, slurping at a plate preoccupies her for a short while.
